What a theater étude is
An étude is a short theatrical exercise in which actors improvise on a given theme or situation. It's a classic practice in acting schools: "you are a couple after a quarrel, action for two minutes." The étude trains presence, interaction, and spontaneity.
In the traditional form the étude requires a group and a teacher. Chitacle offers an alternative format: pair reading with the option to continue in improvisation.
How the étude works in Chitacle
- Step 1 cold reading of the play by roles. Here you get the context, the characters, the relationships between them.
- Step 2 after the read scene, you can both stay in role and keep improvising: what the characters say next, what they didn't say, how they react a minute later.
- Step 3 stepping out of the role and discussing it. Also part of the format.
How this differs from an ordinary étude
- Not "from scratch." There's a starting context from the play.
- Not "in a studio." Video call over the internet.
- Not "in front of a teacher." Only you and your partner.
- Not "short." You can play for an hour or more.
