What an online theater for two is

Chitacle is a new format for live communication that resembles neither a café date, nor a messenger chat, nor a TV series. Two people meet over video, the same play opens on each of their screens, and they read it aloud by roles. An hour of playing together with voice, pauses, glances — and you have lived through someone else's story together.

Unlike a real theater there is no auditorium and no director. You can stop, ask again, laugh, replay a line. This is your theater for two — no rules, no stakes, no preparation.

This is an adult project: registration and participation from age 18. The plays' themes — relationships, crisis, passion, parting, meeting, farewell — everything that interests an adult.

How the meeting is arranged

In Chitacle you can meet in different ways. You choose the scenario that fits you right now:

You can invite viewers to your meeting (in every format except instant) — friends, family, colleagues. They join as observers and watch the reading without intervening. We built this into the project — inviting viewers is easy, through an email link.

How the meeting itself goes

Camera and microphone are required in every meeting type — this is theater by voice and gaze, without them the point is lost.

What plays you might get

The Chitacle repertoire has more than 200 original plays — plays for two and monoplays for one. All plays are written within the project — freely distributed perpetually and worldwide, with no rights claims. The texts can be used for productions, readings, teaching. The only requirement — attribution to the author (Chitacle) and links to our resources.

Plays are not chosen manually — the system decides which play a pair gets in the current meeting. That is part of the format: you don't know in advance what you'll read. So every meeting is a discovery.

Play length: plays for two — 35–45 minutes, monoplays — 20–25 minutes. One meeting gets one play. But talking afterward — with no time limit, even until morning. That is the point: the play is the occasion, the conversation after is the main thing.

Liked a play and want the full text? Send the title to chitacle.online@gmail.com — we'll send you the file. You learn the title during your meeting in the theater.

Who the online theater for two is for

Chitacle isn't just "a dating app." It's a new category: a social immersive platform. So the audience is wider than it seems at first glance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download a program or app?
No. Chitacle works right in the browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox. On computer, tablet, and phone.
Can I choose the play myself?
No. The system chooses the play — that is part of the format. You don't know in advance what you'll get, and that is the intrigue of every meeting. When the play is assigned to the pair, a card appears on the screen with its title, length, number of lines, and genre.
If I don't have a partner — who will read with me?
The whole project is made for people who don't have a regular reading partner. In most meeting scenarios the system picks a random stranger who also wants to read. A specific person can be invited via a personal link (soon).
Can I invite viewers to my meeting?
Yes. In every meeting except instant ones you can invite viewers via an email link — friends, family, colleagues. They join as observers and watch the reading from the side without intervening. In instant meetings we don't enable this — the match happens instantly, there's no time to invite.
How long does the meeting last?
A play for two — 35–45 minutes of reading, a monoplay — 20–25 minutes. Talking afterward — no time limit, even until morning. One play per meeting.
What kind of plays do you have?
200+ original plays for two and monoplays, written specifically for the project. Freely distributed under CC BY 4.0. Contemporary drama, various genres. If you liked one — write the title to chitacle.online@gmail.com and we'll send the file.
Are camera and microphone required?
Yes — this is theater by voice and gaze. Without video the point is lost.
What languages does the site support?
The site is available in 5 languages: Russian, English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic. The play repertoire is currently mostly in Russian; the multilingual repertoire grows as the project develops.
Any age restriction?
Chitacle is an adult project, registration from age 18. The plays' themes and language are for adult readers.
