Fear of looking foolish: how to handle it

Read plays online with a partner — in 5 languages: Русский · English · Español · العربية · 中文.

The fear of looking foolish is a powerful brake on meeting people. It keeps you silent where you could have spoken. Chitacle steps out of that trap with a simple move: you speak not your own words but the words of a character in a play.

Where the fear of looking foolish comes from

The older a person gets, the higher the inner bar for 'how to sound'. You want to be witty, precise, original — and natural at the same time. An impossible combination. So the brain chooses silence as the safest option.

It's especially acute at a first meeting: the stranger involuntarily becomes 'the one judging'. Every phrase you might say runs through an inner critic, and most of them are scrapped before they can be spoken.

What the role changes

In Chitacle you speak in character. You're not 'presenting yourself' — you're voicing a character. That lifts responsibility for every word: if a line is strange, it's the author, not you. If a phrase is foolish, it's the character, not you.

And the paradox: it's precisely through this protective distance that you gradually start to speak as yourself. After thirty minutes of reading, when the role has become transparent, you speak more freely than in any 'ordinary' meeting.
