Fear of the first word: why it's so hard to begin

Read plays online with a partner — in 5 languages: Русский · English · Español · العربية · 中文.

Fear of the first word is the main barrier to adult meeting. Not fear of rejection, not fear of judgment — but the small, specific fear of that first second when you have to open your mouth. In Chitacle it simply isn't there: the first words are already written by the playwright.

What happens in that first second

Before a conversation begins, the brain has a task: choose the opening line. It should be clever, warm, original — and at the same time not pompous, not clingy, not banal. These contradictory demands lock the brain up.

So we end up with 'hi, how are you' — the safest and dullest option. Then we spend the whole meeting trying to make up for that first misstep.

Why it's especially painful for adults

What Chitacle offers

In Chitacle there is no 'choose the opening line' task. The first words are already written by the playwright. They were said by Anton Chekhov, Albert Camus, or a contemporary playwright — not by you. All that remains is to voice them.

That takes responsibility for the beginning off your shoulders. And paradoxically, a minute later you're already talking more easily than in any other first-contact situation. Because the hardest part is behind you — and it wasn't yours.
