Empathy development is a skill trained through entering someone else's role. Chitacle offers a practical exercise: partner reading of a play by roles. When you speak in another person's voice, you start hearing them from within.
How empathy is connected with theater
Empathy is the ability to inwardly respond to another's experience. This isn't "understanding with the mind," it's resonance. And this resonance is the basis of the theatrical craft.
When an actor plays a role, they temporarily live someone else's life. Through this, access to different emotional registers is trained. This same training works for non-actors too — through partner reading of plays.
Which exercises train empathy
- Reading someone else's voice. You say words that your character says from their life.
- Reading with a change of gender. A paradox: sometimes it's easier to understand "the other" by reading their role.
- Reading with an emotional shift. One scene in anger, in tenderness, in fatigue.
- Listening to the partner in role. Not "waiting for my line," but hearing what the other is saying.
- Improvisation after the play. What would the characters say next — if they could?
Why it works
- The protective layer of the role allows you to enter someone else's emotion without threat to yourself.
- The voice bodily lives through the emotion — it stops being abstract.
- The partner is a living person. Their reaction draws out your authentic one.
- Cold reading doesn't allow "rehearsing a defense" — reactions are natural.
Who this is useful for
- Psychologists for their own empathy training.
- Communication trainers material for exercises.
- HR specialists for employee development.
- Family counselors for working with couples.
- Literature teachers for deep reading.
- All adults as a personal practice.
