Why "royalty-free" is a rarity
In most cases staging a play requires royalty payments to the author or their heir — on average 8–15% of the box office. For small collectives this is complex: contracts, agencies, reporting. For amateur productions — impossible.
As a result theaters stage either classics (where the copyright term has expired), or switch to their own texts, or refuse from productions. Chitacle offers a third path — contemporary original texts.
How this is arranged legally
All Chitacle plays are published under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license. This license is an international standard. The conditions:
- Can be used for any purposes, including commercial.
- Can be adapted changed, cut, rewritten.
- Can be distributed copied, printed, transferred.
- Author must be attributed Chitacle.
No royalties, no contracts, no applications to the agency.
