"The First Line Decides Everything" — A Myth That Makes Us Freeze

Read plays online with a partner — in 5 languages: Русский · English · Español · العربية · 中文.

"The first line decides everything" — a myth that makes us freeze before meeting. In fact, almost nobody remembers the first line — they remember the tone of the whole meeting. Chitacle is arranged so that there is no first line — there's someone else's text.

Where the myth came from

Social networks and pop psychology launched the idea: "the first impression forms in 7 seconds." This is a half-truth — neurobiologically the impression really forms quickly, but is corrected in the following minutes. And after an hour of meeting nobody remembers what you said in the first second.

At the same time the myth works in the opposite direction: we're paralyzed precisely by the certainty that the first phrase will decide the fate of the meeting. And as a result we speak worse than we could have.

What really decides the meeting

Not one of these factors is tied to one specific phrase. They form over minutes and hours.

What Chitacle offers

On Chitacle there's no first line. The first words are the words of the play's author. Your voice pronounces them, but they aren't yours. This removes the trap "the first line decides everything" at its very root.

Then you both enter the text: the voice finds its intonation, breathing evens out, anxiety subsides. By the tenth minute "the first impression" has long passed — and what remains is what really decides: how you work with the text together.

What this changes in self-perception
